Valentine’s Day – Top 8 Things To Do

Valentine's Day What To Do

Whether you’re single, in a relationship, divorced or none of the above, it really is difficult to avoid February 14th. With the shops filled with red hearts, loved up cards and more chocolates and flowers than usual, there is no doubt Valentine’s Day is on its way. It is a weird time of year for everyone; it reminds all the singletons that they’re single while prompting all the loved up couples to say “I love you” a few more times than usual. No matter your situation this year or your Valentine’s plans, here I have put together a few things you could do, to either make you embrace the love or make you forget about the romance all together!

The Other Woman (2014)

Starring Cameron Diaz, Kate Upton, Leslie Mann

Why should you watch this on Valentine’s Day?

This film is all about 3 women coming together after finding out they’re all seeing the same man. The betrayed wife, successful girlfriend and the young, blonde, casual fling all team up and plot against him for revenge on cheating Mark. Filled with comedic lines throughout and a hilarious plot this is sure to lift your spirits and make you giggle and forget about your own relationship problems for once! This is a feel-good film giving you super summery vibes and female empowerment for sure! Available on Netflix, making it super easy to watch.

Favourite Quote?

Carly: “We got played by the same guy…do you want vodka or tequila?”

10 Things I Hate About You (1999)

Starring Heath Ledger, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Julia Stiles

Why should you watch this on Valentine’s Day?

This classic 90s high school film is the perfect light-hearted, feel-good movie. The new guy (Cameron) sets his eyes on the most gorgeous, most popular girl in school (Bianca) but there’s a catch; she can’t date until her she-devil of a sister does (Kat). Heath Ledger’s character, Patrick, adds so much charm when he changes from the scary,  rebellious guy to a soft and caring character thanks to his attraction to Kat’s unconventional ways. Without giving you any spoilers, there will definitely be some tears shed as the film comes to an end!

Favourite Quote?

Kat: “and mostly I hate the way I don’t hate you. Not even close, not even a little, not even at all.”

(I also love Patrick’s serenade for Kat on the sports field – you definitely won’t miss it!)

Me Before You

By Jojo Moyes

I’m sure you have all heard of this book or at least the film before, because of it’s truly heart aching story. But if you haven’t, I will explain. Bubbly, down-to-earth Louisa needs a new job after losing hers at The Buttered Bun teashop, so when she finds the opportunity to care for the Traynor’s quadriplegic son, Will, she is delighted. At first, they really don’t get on but after a few weeks and months, their personalities gel and they find themselves within each other – which undoubtedly angers Louisa’s boyfriend Patrick. This is a tale of love like no other as you follow Louisa and Will grow together over the 6 short months they have with each other.

Why should you read this on Valentine’s Day?

When ‘meeting’ him for the first time, the rich, stuck up, sarcastic Will is most likely to grind your gears with his bad attitude and manners, but I’m sure you’ll learn to love him just as much as you love Louisa. This is such a beautiful story that will no doubt warm your soul and will leave you with tear-filled eyes throughout – don’t say I didn’t warn you! An unconventional love story of pure and unprejudiced love; it is most definitely worth the read.

One Day

By David Nicholls

After spending the night together after graduation from Edinburgh University in 1988, Emma and Dexter begin a beautiful but problematic friendship. In every chapter, both characters are visited on 15 July a year on, for 20 years following their lives as they grow with and without each other. While Dexter travels the world drinking and sleeping with numerous women and eventually becoming a successful TV presenter, Emma remains unsuccessful in writing and performing plays and ends up becoming a waitress in an awful Tex-Mex restaurant in north London. Throughout the insights into their lives chapter by chapter, there is an ongoing battle with their feelings towards each other as they both meet, and break up with, other people.

Why should you read this on Valentine’s Day?

Hiding your true feelings about someone you feel you shouldn’t like is something all of us have felt at least once in our life, which makes the story relatable in this way, as well as equally heartbreaking. Filled with humorous lines throughout from both characters, this book is something that will leave you giggling at every page while it stills hits you hard with the trials and tribulations of love. Definitely, something you should consider reading no matter your relationship status as there is something in there anyone can relate to.

Breakfast In Bed

Banana pancakes with crispy bacon and syrup

8 rashers smoky streaky bacon (or pancetta strips)

140g self-raising flour

2 tbsp light soft brown sugar

1tsp baking powder

2 ripe bananas – 1 mashed, 1 thinly sliced

25g butter, melted with a little extra

2 large eggs

125ml milk

maple syrup

How to make them

Heat the grill to high. Cook bacon for 5-7 mins on a baking tray lined with foil, leave the tray inside to keep warm when they’re done.

In a bowl, mix the flour with baking powder, sugar and a pinch of salt. Make a well in the centre and add the mashed banana, eggs, butter and milk.

Whisk to a smooth batter without any flour lumps.

Heat a little butter in a large frying pan and ladle in small dollops of the pancake batter when sizzling. Leave a little space between each, as they will spread out.

Put 2 or 3 slices of banana onto the surface of each pancake and cook for 2 mins over medium heat.

Flip the pancakes over when bubbles appear between the banana slices, and cook for 1 min more until puffed up and golden.

Transfer to a plate and keep warm with the bacon while you cook the rest.

Finally, serve the pancakes with the crispy bacon and a drizzle of maple syrup (or a different topping of your choice if you want something sweeter!).

2 tsp tomato purée                                                                                                                                                         1 yellow pepper, deseeded and thinly sliced

1 tsp tamari, plus extra to serve (optional)                                                                                                               2 red onions (173g), thinly sliced

1 tsp Chinese five spice                                                                                                                                                 100g Tenderstem broccoli halved

2 tbsp crunchy peanut butter (without palm oil or sugar)                                                                                    100g frozen soya beans, thawed

1 red chilli, seeded and chopped

handful basil leaves

How to make it

First of all, put the raisins in a measuring jug or small, high-sided bowl and pour over 100ml boiling water, and stir in the garlic, vinegar, tomato purée, tamari and five spice.

Then, blitz with a hand blender until smooth and stir in the peanut butter until well mixed.

Pour boiling water over the noodles and soak for 5 mins.

In a non-stick wok heat the oil, add the ginger with the vegetables and chilli and stir-fry for 5 mins or more until the veg has softened, but still has some bite.

Drain the noodles and add to the pan with the hoisin and toss well while adding a little extra water if necessary to moisten, then toss through the basil leaves.

Finally, serve in a bowl and eat with chopsticks!
